I started drawing trees as a return to ground after seven years of mostly performance-based work about race, rooted in journalism and community. I needed time with just me, a pencil, and a piece of paper. Nonetheless they found their way to be about trying to capture their complexity and depth. I always said that the hardest things for me to draw are trees and rubble, and have found myself committed to both.
